Ecuador, though one of the smallest countries in South America, is also ranked among the world's most biologically and culturally diverse. From the pristine beaches of the tropical Pacific coast to the snowcapped peaks of the high Andes to the dense rainforests of Amazonia, and the extraordinary Galapagos Islands, there is something for everyone in this extraordinary, undiscovered treasure. Ecuador is a vibrantly multicultural society. Mestizos, dozens of indigenous peoples, AfroEcuadorians and descendants of Dutch colonists are all part of Ecuador's rich ethnic tapestry. The country has two official languages: Spanish and Quechua.
Southern Cross runs seven CELTA courses a year on a very rural unspoilt part of the Ecuadorian coast. Participants are afforded the chance to complete the CELTA at a site of great natural beauty and enjoy the many diverse attractions of the surrounding area in between learning how to teach English to some delightful local volunteer students who are extremely grateful for the opportunity to learn English for free as they act as the guinea-pigs for our CELTA participants.
Southern Cross holds one CELTA course in Quito, the capital, which was named UNESCO's first World Heritage Site because of its uniquely preserved historical centre which is considered to be the finest in all of South America. A five thousand year history of human settlement, it´s stunning position surrounded by the snowcapped peaks of the Andes, and lively cultural and intellectual scene combine to make this former capital of the Incan Empire one of the most sought after destinations in the world.
Southern Cross began in Guayaquil which is Ecuador's largest city and commercial hub. A world reknowned billion dollar renovation project has tranformed what was a rough and tumble port town into a thriving tropical metropolis in a decade. Guayaquil's completely restored colonial old town of Las Peñas and its graceful riverfront parks and botanical gardens enclose a bustling modern business centre, the heart of Ecuador's booming economy and host to many international conferences and trade shows.
